Ecopsychology studies the relationship between human beings and the natural world through ecological and psychological principles.^[1] The field seeks to develop and understand ways of expanding the emotional connection between individuals and the natural world, thereby assisting individuals with developing sustainable lifestyles and remedying alienation from nature. Theodore Roszak is credited with coining the term in his 1992 book, The Voice of the Earth. He later expanded the idea in the 1995 anthologyEcopsychology with co-editors Mary Gomes and Allen Kanner.

Jon Young has been studying traditional cultures for the past 30 years. As an expert tracker and nature mentor who has worked with children and adults throughout the US and Europe, he intimately understands and has seen the effects of our disconnection with nature, ourselves and each other. From this disconnection a degenerative cultural system has emerged that has led to competition, strife, alienation, isolation, and rapid environmental degradation.

When people are connected deeply to nature, they begin to embody the qualities that lead to deeper connection with self and others.

In this call, Jon will tell us how we can begin to build strong local communities designed on the bedrock of deep nature connection. He will explain specific practices that will help us repair our culture and create the structures that increase bonds and strengthen relationships between individuals and individuals, individuals and the group, and individuals and nature. There was an old lady, from the "Cree" tribe, named "Eyes of Fire", who prophesied that one day, because of the white mans' or Yo-ne-gis' greed, there would come a time, when the fish would die in the streams, the birds would fall from the air, the waters would be blackened, and the trees would no longer be, mankind as we would know it would all but cease to exist.
There would come a time when the "keepers of the legend, stories, culture rituals, and myths, and all the Ancient Tribal Customs" would be needed to restore us to health. They would be mankinds’ key to survival, they were the "Warriors of the Rainbow". There would come a day of awakening when all the peoples of all the tribes would form a New World of Justice, Peace, Freedom and recognition of the Great Spirit.  

  The "Warriors of the Rainbow" would spread these messages and teach all peoples of the Earth or "Elohi". They would teach them how to live the "Way of the Great Spirit". They would tell them of how the world today has turned away from the Great Spirit and that is why our Earth is "Sick". The "Warriors of the Rainbow" would show the peoples that this "Ancient Being" (the Great Spirit), is full of love and understanding, and teach them how to make the "Earth or Elohi" beautiful again. These Warriors would give the people principles or rules to follow to make their path right with the world. These principles would be those of the Ancient Tribes. The Warriors of the Rainbow would teach the people of the ancient practices of Unity, Love and Understanding. They would teach of Harmony among people in all four comers of the Earth. Like the Ancient Tribes, they would teach the peoples how to pray to the Great Spirit with love that flows like the beautiful mountain stream, and flows along the path to the ocean of life. Once again, they would be able to feel joy in solitude and in councils. They would be free of petty jealousies and love all mankind as their brothers, regardless of color, race or religion. They would feel happiness enter their hearts, and become as one with the entire human race. Their hearts would be pure and radiate warmth, understanding and respect for all mankind, Nature, and the Great Spirit. They would once again fill their minds, hearts, souls, and deeds with the purest of thoughts. They would seek the beauty of the Master of Life - the Great Spirit! They would find strength and beauty in prayer and the solitudes of life.  Their children would once again be able to run free and enjoy the treasures of Nature and Mother Earth. Free from the fears of toxins and destruction, wrought by the Yo-ne-gi and his practices of greed. The rivers would again run clear, the forests be abundant and beautiful, the animals and birds would be replenished. The powers of the plants and animals would again be respected and conservation of all that is beautiful would become a way of life. The poor, sick and needy would be cared for by their brothers and sisters of the Earth. These practices would again become a part of their daily lives.  The leaders of the people would be chosen in the old way - not by their political party, or who could speak the loudest, boast the most, or by name calling or mud slinging, but by those whose actions spoke the loudest. Those who demonstrated their love, wisdom, and courage and those who showed that they could and did work for the good of all, would be chosen as the leaders or Chiefs. They would be chosen by their "quality" and not the amount of money they had obtained. Like the thoughtful and devoted "Ancient Chiefs", they would understand the people with love, and see that their young were educated with the love and wisdom of their surroundings. They would show them that miracles can be accomplished to heal this world of its ills, and restore it to health and beauty. The tasks of these "Warriors of the Rainbow" are many and great. There will be terrifying mountains of ignorance to conquer and they shall find prejudice and hatred. They must be dedicated, unwavering in their strength, and strong of heart. They will find willing hearts and minds that will follow them on this road of returning "Mother Earth" to beauty and plenty - once more.  The day will come, it is not far away. The day that we shall see how we owe our very existence to the people of all tribes that have maintained their culture and heritage. Those that have kept the rituals, stories, legends, and myths alive. It will be with this knowledge, the knowledge that they have preserved, that we shall once again return to "harmony" with Nature, Mother Earth, and mankind. It will be with this knowledge that we shall find our "Key to our Survival".  This is the story of the "Warriors of the Rainbow" and this is my reason for protecting the culture, heritage, and knowledge of my ancestors. I know that the day "Eyes of Fire" spoke of - will come! I want my children and grandchildren to be prepared to accept this task.The task of being one of the........"Warriors of the Rainbow".

Peter Bane - How I'm Preparing for the Local Future: Permaculture

Educator Peter Bane is preparing for the local future, beyond the global economy and after peak oil. Bane's talk is the story of the history of permaculture, and how he has used permaculture methods to move towards a self-sustaining homestead using free or low-cost techniques.

Peter Bane is the publisher of Permaculture Activist Magazine for 20 years. He is a garden farmer in Bloomington, Indiana. He teaches permaculture design for Indiana University. He has a bachelors from University in Illinois in political design. Bane has a diplomna in permaculture design from the British Academy of Permculture design. He served on the peak oil task force for the City of Bloomington, Indiana, which was adopted in 2009 December. Bane is currently working on a permaculture handbook for people who live in the suburbs.

In this talk, Bane describes, in his own words, how he is moving beyond the money economy, to providing his essential needs from his homestead, and how he is utilizing the principles of permaculture.

This talk immediately followed Nicole Foss's talk on how she prepared her family for peak oil and economic uncertainty.

Joel Salatin: Reinventing the Farm

"Can We Feed The World?" Joel Salatin at Wanderlust's Speakeasy

"Nobody goes hungry because there's not enough food. Consider that we are the most overfed but under-nourished country in history. It's not a matter of production. Every day we throw away enough food to feed the planet in its entirety."

Joel Salatin never disappoints -- he always scintillates when he presents at Wanderlust, and not just because he's impassioned and incredibly well-informed. He presents facts about mundane things -- dirt, farms, food -- in a way you'd never considered before and makes you realize how out of balance our current assumptions about the food chain are. So when he delves into the question, "Can We Feed The World?", you can bet he has some information and opinions that will change the way you think about what you eat and where it comes from.

First, he debunks many early studies done on "organics" that concluded they were ineffectual by decrying that "When the UN or some PhD professor studies the existing system, [they miss that] the existing system is completely broken. So the data is making the assumption of an assault on ecology rather than studying a system that is a massage or a caresser of this ecological wound. And so, when you open the newspaper and see the scientific reports, the data is skewed -- it is wrong."

From there, he jumps into the reasons underlying the problems inherent in feeding the world, elaborating on:

• Biomimicry and why a mechanical view of life misses out on the important biological viewpoint of life,
• Why the "how to grow it bigger, faster, fatter, cheaper" mentality has got it all wrong,
• How the human choice to mate horses with donkeys represents the short-sightedness of genetically-modified "evolution",
• How the linear methods of design and evaluation totally miss out on the "whole" that is intrinsic to ecological studies,
• How an Austrian chemist launched the chemical view of agriculture,

Ultimately, Salatin's conclusion that backyard gardens and multi-speciation are far more productive per acre is important, but just as valuable are the tools and facts he shares with you to be able to articulate your own credible “feed the world” argument.

'Unlike most South American civilizations, the Taironas lived in relative peace with the Spanish for the first seventy years following the Conquest until Spanish demands finally caused a rebellion which was ruthlessly crushed. Tairona survivors fled up into the mountain to reconstitute their society.

Pioneering fieldwork this century was done by Gerardo Reichel-Dolmatoff from the 1940's to the 1970's, but the harshness of the terrain makes the area relatively under-researched. Films, notably by Robert Gardner, David Attenborough and Brian Moser, have been made about the Arhuaco (or Ika), but the Kogi were almost unknown until they agreed to the making of 'From the Heart of the World - The Elder Brothers' Warning', a BBC documentary made by Alan Ereira in 1990.

The film contained a strong message of warning concerning the environment. "Up to now we have ignored the Younger Brother. We have not deigned even to give him a slap. But now we can no longer look after the world alone. The Younger Brother is doing too much damage. He must see, and understand, and assume responsibility. Now we will have to work together. Otherwise, the world will die." Kogi Mama

The Tairona Heritage Trust has successfully cooperated with Gonavindua Tairona by raising money for the purchase of their ancient territories. Its work was largely with the Kogi, but the Trust aims to broaden the scope of that work by gathering material concerning all aspects of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and its peoples. Tales From the Hive

NOVA chronicles a year in the life of a bee colony with stunning images that take viewers inside the innermost secrets of the hive. The documentary team spent a year developing special macro lenses and a bee studio to deliver the film's astonishing sequences. These include the "wedding flight" of the colony's virgin queen as it mates in mid-air with a drone; the life-and-death battle between two rival queens for the colony's throne; and the defeat and death of a thieving wasp at the entrance to the hive. The show also explores such mysteries as the famous "waggle dance" with which scout bees signal the exact direction and distance of nectar sources to the rest of the hive. A vivid picture emerges of the bee's highly organized social life, revolving around the disciplined sharing of construction tasks, the collection of nectar, and warding off enemies.
