NEPAL PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE MACRH 2016 – Hasera Farm

In one of my recent articles i wrote for permaculture news i described a little bit the impact of the earthquake last April in Nepal. You can see the article here.

This time i am happy to share with you that i will be going back to Nepal for the first time after the Earthquake to assist my friend, teacher and Permaculture Pioneer Govinda Sharma with a Permaculture Design Certificate in March 2016.

Govinda Sharma has been practicing and teaching Permaculture since 1992 and has facilitated 30 PDCs and about 250 short courses in various aspects of Permaculture. His trainings have included participants from almost 55 countries.

Govinda Sharma presenting at the Permaculture Conference in Malawi 2009

He has a Masters Degree in Ecological Agriculture and has worked with farmers all over Nepal and in countries like Austria, Japan, Malawi, India, Qatar and France.

Govinda Sharma & Roman Eisenköbl during a PDC in South India,Auroville

Co-Facilitator Roman Eisenkoelbl, was part so far of 13 PDC Courses (organization & co-Facilitation) so far and some of his teachers include David Homlgren, Rosemary Morrow, Robyn Francis, Alex Kruger (Berg en Dal Ecovillage),Rico Zook(i-permaculture) and Govinda Sharma (organichasera – Nepal). He is the founder of the Soil Sun Soul Collective ( http://www.soilsunsoul.net/) a transformational Permaculture Education Project.
During a PDC together in South India

Together they will offer a high quality Permaculture Design Course Certificate at an amazing Permaculture Farm – Hasera. HASERA Farm, one of Nepals leading Permaculture Research and Training Centre dedicated to the promotion of Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Development and Permaculture.see more here http://www.organichasera.org/

HASERA is a Research and Training Centre dedicated to the promotion of Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Development and Permaculture in Nepal and abroad..
The 3 Objectives of Hasera Farm:
  1. To generate knowledge base on sustainable agriculture, sustainable development and Permaculture through farm and community research.

2. To practice and demonstrate the proven techniques in the real field situation.

3. To disseminate the proven knowledge of sustainable agriculture, sustainable development and Permaculture to the global communities through training, workshops and publications
At HASERA an exceptional integration of crops, animals and natural biodiversity can be found.

View from Hasera farm towards the snow peaked Himalayan Mountain range

The major aspects that can be learned and observed in this farm during the exposure visits include:
Permaculture
Climate Change
Community Forestry
Natural Resource Management
Sustainable / Organic Agriculture
Sustainable Community Development
Integrated Ecological Pest Management
Certification and Marketing of Organic Products
Soil and water management in the Hill Farming Systems
Integrated Farm Designing with principles of Permaculture

Many of the people might be interested in knowing aobut the current situation in Nepal and also how Permaculture Dsign has benefited places like Hasera Farm during the earthquake. Here is a quick update.
How Permaculture Design & Strategies saved Hasera Farm from the earthquake last April:
The Impact of the Earthquake at Hasera Farm and the response:
At Hasera Farm, Govinda Sharma and his family have been applying Permaculture Design & Strategies for the last 22 years. They have applied Permaculture Principles to all zones of their farm which resulted in a very diverse and resilient systems which is nowadays one of the best Permaculture Farm Project examples in the whole of Nepal.

Undoubtedly, major focus in terms of Design for Disaster Strategies has been given for the design of zone 0 :: the house.

While designing the house we designed it in pyramidal shape and also made it in concentric ring structures. So the main structure of the house, which is at the center is taller and the support structures which encircle the main house from the outside are shorter. This made the house wide base and narrow top. This provided the enough anchor for the house to stand still even during the threatening shakes of 7.9 Richter scale earth quake in April 2015.

Fig: HASERA farm house, tall center supported by short surroundings

Also, we put doors at every sides of the house and also at both floors. It made us possible to escape out of the house immediately after noticing the earth quake. So at the time when all the houses in the surroundings fell in to the ground, our farm house stood strong.

Besides these, we have more than 10 special design features at our home which make it more ecological, social and peaceful.

Now we are sharing our house designing skills with the local communities and helping them to make their homes accordingly.

Pict: Sharing the knowledge of Permaculture home designing with the community.

Some 173 families in our surroundings have been benefitted by our support program. We are helping them through knowledge and some materials to renovate their house with the use of principles of Permaculture. The problem created by the earth quake is being used as an opportunity to redesign the village in Permaculture way.

More nicely, we received donations from many Permaculture friends from throughout the world in this mission proving the integrity between the members of Permaculture community throughout the world.
Slowly things are getting back to normal step by step and Permaculture Design can definitely play a major role in supporting this process.
The Permaculture Design Course is a first big step on your Permaculture Journey !

The course price of 450 Dollar includes food, bed, tuition, stationeries, training materials, exposure visits!

Here is a SLIDESHOW from a PDC Course we did together in South India:

have a look at some images from our Permaculture Design Course in March 2014 with Govinda Sharma from Nepal,Roman and Martin. It was a wonderful time, great experiences we shared together and really amazing group of people meet, shared and learned for 2 weeks in South India,on the edge of Auroville.see here:

In the 70s, Gotsch develops his early studies of complex crop systems in areas in northern Switzerland and southern Germany. He tested for example the ancient traditions of planting corn with beans, but also experimented with new associations such as wheat and pea or raspberry, apple and cherry, among others.

He arrives in Brazil in 1982 and in 1984 sets up on a farm in southern Bahia. The name of the farm, as usual in the region, was a chronicle of the place. Something like "The Runaway from Dry Land." Approximately 500 acres of land rendered unproductive due to bad management and agricultural practices. On this farm he would continue the development of his obsessive experiments in Successional Agroforestry.Today there are about 410 hectares of reforested area, 350 of which were transformed into RPPN (private reserve of natural heritage), plus 120 hectares of Legal Reserve. After 20 years, about 14 springs reappeared on the farm.

International reference in Successional Agroforestry Systems, Ernst Gotsch has developed a refined technique of planting which principles and practices can be applied to different ecosystems.

Permaculture Design Course near Barcelona – October 2015

This October we are returning to the magical La Garrotxa, near Barcelona, for our 3rd Permaculture Design Course in Spain.

We are excited to offer a 17-day PERMACULTURE DESIGN CERTIFICATE (PDC) PLUS Course with over 90 hours curriculum, full of practical knowledge, hands-on experiences and design exercises in a place of great natural beauty.

The PDC program integrates with optional daily yoga sessions ,mindfulness practices, Deep Ecology/ Nature Connection exercises, outdoor learning and community living. The course takes place from the 2nd-18th of October 2015 in a wonderful, rural, stone house and stunning natural surroundings of La Garrotxa, near Girona and Barcelona. Participants will be immersed in an inspiring learning environment while living close to nature for the full duration of the course.

We have Rico Zook from the US joining us as the main facilitator. In addition to academic and professional credentials, Mr. Zook has spent more than 25 years living in nature, including long-term residencies in California’s Yosemite National Park, the demanding Sangria de Cristo Mountains of Northern New Mexico, and as a homesteader in Northern California wilderness. For more than a decade as Land Manager for the Lama Foundation, a spiritual community and retreat center North of Taos, NM, Mr. Zook designed and transformed the rugged, semi-arid high-altitude site that had been decimated by wildfire into one of beauty and productivity.

Outdoor learning with Rico during last year's PDC (La Garrotxa)

Using permaculture practices, a lifetime of observation and interpretation of the natural world and the knowledge of how to create human harmony with it, he has built a visible and successful permaculture demonstration and teaching site. It is a model of design, integrating the needs, resources and yields of community and nature in proactive and abundant ways with respectful and restorative impacts on the environment. Mr. Zook is a graduate of Sonoma State University, from which he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies focused on land restoration, with minors in Biology and Philosophy. You can find out more about his work here: www.i-permaculture.org

Kate and Roman from Soil Sun Soul have been involved in organizing and working with Permaculture and alternative education since 8 years in 5 Continents. Visit their blog here
http://soil-sun-soul.blogspot.com/

Our aim with Soil Sun Soul is to design and offer whole person learning experiences which aim to:
  • increase ecological literacy,
  • empower individuals to design regenerative life systems using ecological principles,
  • reconnect us to the Earth
  • encourage holistic thinking and decision making.
As Warren Brush says in his podcast interview: ¨The Permaculture Design Course is a basic training for living in the 21st century in a way that actually makes sense.¨ This course helps you to awaken to the fundamental patterns in nature and reconnect yourself to the web of life.

Once again, the course location is in the area of La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. Some parts of the park, including the best preserved volcanic cones, are fully protected as nature reserves. The mountain landscape, the sun and climate provide a variety of vegetation, with holm oaks, common oaks and beech trees of exceptional value to the landscape.

Breathtaking landscapes of  La Garrotxa

The Mas Pujou Team: Artiz, Narcis, Carmen and Oliver came to this beautiful site in 2014. Their home is an ideal place to enjoy the peacefull nature and sorroundings. They started to work together in the forest, to renovate the old stone house and establish vegetable gardens.

The restored stone masia where we host the course at Mas Pujou

Stunning views from Mas Pujou

They also joined the CIC, Cooperativa Integral Catalan, a Transitional initiative for social transformation from below, through self·management, self·organization and networking. You can learn more about CIC here: http://cooperativa.cat/en/

The local Regenerative Agriculture Farm Planeses usally is our main organic, local food supplier. This project is another amazing initiative in the La Garrotxa area and we had the pleasure of volunteering there ourselves, planting and harvesting vegetables and taking care of chickens. We aim to support the local economy, by keeping money circulating in the neighbouring community and cooperating  with people from our local area.

Overview of Planeses Farm

This farm runs a  CSA project with over 90 custumers and is using cutting-edge direct marketing and regenerative agriculture techniques. During our 17 day PDC PLUS Course we also plan to visit this inspiring project.

Vegetable production at Planeses

This time, the Mas Pujou team will be organizing and preparing much of the delicious, healthy food we serve. It will be sourced from their organic gardens and from a local cooperative they are working with.

This 17 Day experience will give us time for some hands-on experiences on site at Mas Pujou. We also integrate optional morning yoga sessions. some midfullness practises and some Nature Connection excercises during the course. There will be a "Food as Medicine" talk by special guest Martina Wastl from PranaKitchen who will also share some of her delicious recipes to try.

Overall, this will be a one-of-a-kind experience as the Soil Sun Soul team always does its best to take  everyone involved on another transformational learning journey!

The Permaculture way of looking at things, everything is a gift, everything has a value, nothing should be wasted.
Permaculture is the harmonious integration of all life kingdoms into agriculturally productive ecosystems and socially just environments producing sound economic outcomes through systems management. Itis a regenerative design intention reflecting patterns in nature that seeks to build interconnections allowing for energy efficiency and abundance of yield.

In other words its ecology in action, positive responses to new opportunities as culture evolves towards anew height of consciousness.

WHO is it for?

For everybody from young to old from all backgrounds and all walks of life! In particular those wanting to lead projects of regeneration, urban agriculture, community development, and broad-scale farming. This unique opportunity to recharge and gain environmental literacy will be spent over two weeks in a natural environment with limited access to wifi and transport links.
